Monthly Newsletter

The Greenhorn Firewise Community board sends a monthly newsletter to residents who provide us their email address. Over the course of the year, we cover topics such as home hardening, defensible space, evacuation planning, go bags, insurance, and more. Each quarter (three newsletters) has a theme relevant to the season. The topics listed below are typical of each month, though they can vary based on weather and important news and events.

General Knowledge and Planning (Winter)

• November Newsletter: Review the past fire season to plan for next year, getting your insurance discount for being in a Firewise Community .

• December Newsletter: Holiday fire safety, community fire safety resource links.

• January Newsletter: Local fire-related resource links, fire-safety project planning, home inventory, important papers.

Maintaining Your Home and Surrounding Property (Spring)

• February Newsletter: Home hardening and defensible space (including roadside clearance).

• March Newsletter: Why defensible space? What to do with all that fuel? (Disposal, chipping, burning.) Fire smart landscaping.

• April Newsletter: Free green waste disposal, defensible space reminder, burn season status.

Readiness for Fire Season (Summer)

• May Newsletter: Evacuation planning, go bags, Find Your Five, Zones and CodeRED, important papers. Reminders about burn season status, defensible space advisory visits, and free green waste disposal events.

• June Newsletter: Defensible space and roadside clearance review, reflective address and road signs, how not to start a fire, emergency information sources (on line, radio, and apps.

• July Newsletter: Evacuation readiness, red flag warnings, what to do when there is a fire in the area, what to do if you have to evacuate.

Situational Awareness and Safety (Fall)

• August Newsletter: Preparedness reminders--especially to LEAVE EARLY, what to do if you are trapped, zone zero maintenance, wildfire smoke and your health.

• September Newsletter: Preparedness reminders for situational awareness, safe evacuation, and defensible space. Burn ban reminder. Wood stove safety and winter prep.

• October Newsletter: Preparing for burn season (including permits); generator safety; reminders about situational awarenesss, evacuation safety, defensible space upkeep.
