Alternate Routes
Options if Greenhorn is blocked.
Evacuation options for the Greenhorn Firewise Community (GFC) very are limited! Greenhorn Rd. west to Brunswick is the only "easy" way out, and in the event of a large fire in our area, all ways out will be crowded and slow. The earlier you leave, the better.

YOU will need to decide the best route to take based on the direction the fire is coming from. If you have a choice (meaning Greenhorn is open and the fire isn't coming from the west), Greenhorn to the west is the best option unless you live on one of the alternate routes or have a "back way" out from your property.
With these things in mind:
-
Stay aware and informed during fire season, especially on Red Flag Warning days.
-
LEAVE EARLY! Especially if you have livestock, a large recreational vehicle (RV), or people with special needs and/or mobility limitations. This means leaving when there is an evacuation warning (or even earlier), and not waiting for an evacuation order. You may want to head out of town on Red Flag days.
-
If you have an RV that you want to stay in while evacuated, consider moving it out of the area at the beginning of the fire season, or when there are Red Flag Warnings.
-
Do not take RVs or trailers on the private roads listed below. Stay on Greenhorn Road (and leave early!).
-
Evacuate in one vehicle if possible (to help minimize traffic).
-
Be familiar with the routes listed below, as well as any neighborhood "shortcuts."
-
Leave early, leave early, leave early.
-
Please see our Evacuation page for detailed information about evacuation preparation and safety.
Greenhorn Firewise Community has one primary evacuation route and two alternate ways out to County-maintained roads. It is important to note that the alternate routes are private roads--narrow, rough, with few turnouts, and mostly unpaved. They are also maintained by the residents who live along them. Use them ONLY in an emergency situation, and even then, only if necessary.

-
Greenhorn Road (primary route). Greenhorn Road from ~4.25 mile mark, west to Brunswick to SR 174. County maintained road: Two-lane, paved, with turnouts. East of 4.25 miles it's one lane, privately maintained, and becomes a VERY rough dirt road as you go east toward the Hansen Bros. Quarry. Do not take Greenhorn east unless you live near the east end, know it well, and are in a high-clearance, 4WD vehicle.)
-
Lost Lake Road. Greenhorn to Lost Lake to You Bet to SR 174. Private Road: One lane, almost no pull outs, over 50 percent rough unpaved dirt and gravel surface, unsuitable for low clearance vehicles, RVs, and trailers. Slow going even on a normal day.
-
Jones Ridge Road. Greenhorn to Jones Ridge to Meadow Way to Tumbling Creek Road to Red Dog Road to Banner Lava Cap Road. Residents in the area also have connecting road options (see map below). Private Road: One lane in most areas, mostly rough and unpaved dirt and gravel surface, unsuitable for low clearance vehicles, RVs, and trailers. Very slow going, even on a normal day.

To repeat, the safest way to evacuate is to leave early. Traveling on these roads will be extremely slow in an evacuation and a car (or especially an RV or trailer) breaking down can easily halt the whole process. DO NOT take your RV, trailer, or low-clearance vehicle on these alternate routes.
