Wildfire Ready Home & Property Assessments

Helping Homeowners Prepare, Protect, and Insure Their Homes

The Greenhorn Firewise Community is now participating in the Wildfire Ready Homes and Properties Program offered by the Wildfire-Ready Coalition of Nevada County.

In this program, trained volunteer assessors help homeowners understand which home hardening and defensible space actions matter most, and provide prioritized recommendations that can improve wildfire survivability, strengthen insurance eligibility, and support available insurance discounts.

Unlike traditional defensible space inspections, these advisory assessments incorporate the IBHS "Wildfire Prepared Home Checklist," California Department of Insurance "Safer from Wildfires" standards, and CAL FIRE PRC 4291 Defensible Space Requirements. (Note: IBHS = Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety.)

The IBHS checklist identifies defensible space and home hardening actions that work together, as a system, to improve a home’s wildfire survival chances. These guidelines are becoming a new insurance industry standard for insurance discounts. It has the same home hardening and defensible space requirements as CAL FIRE assessments, and more.

What Is a Wildfire Ready Home Assessment?

The assessment is a one-on-one consultation conducted at your home covering:

  • What you can do to make your house and other structures more fire resistant or “hardened.”

  • How to treat the vegetation around your house and other structures to meet the legal defensible space requirements found in California Public Resource Code 4291 and local ordinances.

  • Help you understand which home hardening and defensible space actions matter most, and provide prioritized recommendations that can improve wildfire survivability, strengthen insurance eligibility, and support available insurance discounts.

This is an "assessment," not an "inspection," as there is no threat of enforcement. The advisors provide friendly advice and have no authority to issue citations. The advice is for your use only and it is not reported to anyone, (e.g., insurance companies, government entities). Advice from your visit is shared with no one but you, the property owner or resident.

Greenhorn's Assessor

The Greenhorn Firewise Community is fortunate to have a trained Wildfire Ready Homes Assessor living in our community (Paul Tebbel).

Paul lives in Manion Canyon (about 3 miles up Greenhorn from Brunswick) and has worked many hours with his neighbors to create defensible space in their area. Paul is dedicated to helping others understand how to harden their homes and create defensible space to protect their property. Paul is also a member of our Greenhorn Firewise Community board of directors.
